Georg Wolfgang Knorr "Shells" Pl.IV 1764
Product ID: 31000

Details

This beautiful shell engraving featuring original hand-coloring is from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's work Les Delices des Yeux et de L'Esprit, a la Representaion d'une Collection Universelle des Coquilles. The work was published in 1764 in Nuremberg, Germany.

Knorr was a noted protogeologist, art dealer, painter, and engraver. He developed his skill for copper-plate engravings working for Leonhard Blanc & Martin Tyroff in the creation of illustrations for Jacob Scheuchzer's Physica Sacra. Knorr's interest in natural history quickly placed him among a talented group of artists and scientists in Nuremberg, including the reknowned Christoph Jakob Trew.

"Knorr (1705-1761) was one of the leading protogeologists of the eighteenth century as well as a highly competent engraver. Nearly one thousand shells are depicted in this work. The plates are all extremely well drawn and beautifully painted." (Dance, A History of Shell Collecting, p. 50).

Small 4to., 8" x 9 3/4" overall measurement, copperplate engraving, left edge uneven from disbinding, water stain top margin (will mat out), several small foxing marks otherwise excellent condition, Nurenberg, 1764. *Please Note* This image is digitally watermarked, but the electronic watermark does not appear on the actual print.
