This beautiful shell engraving featuring original hand coloring is from Georg Wolfgang Knorr’s work Les Delices des Yeux et de L’Esprit, a la Representaion d’une Collection Universelle des Coquilles.
Knorr (1705-1761) was one of the leading protogeologists of the eighteenth century as well as a highly competent engraver. Nearly one thousand shells are depicted in this work. The plates are all extremely well drawn and beautifully painted. (Dance, A History of Shell Collecting, p. 50).
Dimensions: Small 4to., 8″ x 9 3/4″ overall measurement.
Condition: Left edge uneven from disbinding, water stain top margin will mat out, several small foxing marks otherwise excellent condition.
