 Elizabeth Blackwell
Herbarium Blackwellianum 1757

It is fair to say that Scottish born Eliazbeth Blackwell (1700-1758), had a colorful history.  After her husband was forced into debtors prison and she found herself in a desparate financial situation, Elizabeth was encouraged by Sir Hans Sloane to take up the challenge of producing an herbal (or pharmacopia in modern terminology, a book containing directions for the identification of compound medicinesbased on plants from the New World.  She undertook to illustrate A Curious Herbal and enlisted her physician husband (who was still in prison!) to author the text, in Latin, Greek, Italian, Spanish, German and Dutch.  A Curious Herbal was remarkable because it was essentiallly a one-person operation: Elizabeth drew the 500 illustrations, engraved the copper plates and then finally hand colored them herself.  Due to the need for an updated herbal at that time, A Curious Herbal was successful through a first and then twenty years later, a second edition (The Herbarium Blackwelliianum, revised and enlarged by the great botanist, Jacob Trew). The drama continued later however when, after attaining financial success with their herbal, the Blackwells again slipped into debt and Alexander Blackwell subsequently left Elizabeth for Sweden to restart his life (which didn't last long, Alexander was beheaded for political treason in 1747).  The German or second edition, from which these plates are taken, is generally recognized as artistically superior to the orginal edtion.
