Product ID: 29800

Details

From Harpers Weekly

"THE SEASON OF FOOT-BALL" This wonderful 19th. century woodcut print depicts a spirited game of football on the "racetrack" at Tuxedo Park on a fine autumn afternoon. It chronicles an actual game: "The residents of Tuxedo were fortunate on Saturday, October 11th. [1890] in seeing one of the best games of foot-ball thus far this season. The contesting elevens were from Princeton and the Orange Athletic Club, and the struggle lasted from three o'clock in the afternoon until nearly five, without either side being able to gain a point." For anyone interested in the history of Tuxedo Park and Orange County, New York, this print will make a valuable addition to their collection.

This large print measures 22" x 16", includes fine period details, is in the original uncolored state and is in excellent condition. The crease that is visible is from being bound into the publication and is easily smoothed out when framed. *Please Note* This image is digitally watermarked, but the electronic watermark does not appear on the actual print.

"House at Tuxedo Park, N.Y. for Pierre Lorillard Esq." c.1887
Product ID: 28300

Details

From a rare turn-of-the-century architectural journal.

An architectural print of the Lorillard House, Tuxedo Park, NY, 1887. Jas Brown Lord Architect.

Pierre Lorillard, one of the leading members of the Lorillard Tobacco family, bought thousands of acres of rugged, mountainous land 35 miles northwest of New York City and in 1885 developed it into Tuxedo Park, one of the first planned communities in the U.S. Within a span of only one year, Lorillard, along with his principal architect, Bruce Price, completed the infrastructure of Tuxedo Park and created a community of shingle style "cottages" which were let to members of the Tuxedo Club. Tuxedo Park was associated with the social elite of New York, whose members rotated residences each year between New York, Newport and Tuxedo Park. It was also very well known for it's Autumn Ball which was a social highlight each year. The tuxedo coat reputedly got it's name there when Griswold Lorillard, Pierre Lorillard's son, wore his frock coat the the Autumn Ball with the tails cut off after a style that he brought from England.

Small folio, 12 1/2" x 8 3/4" overall measurement, nicely hand-colored, slight paper toning othewise excellent condition. *Please Note* This image is digitally watermarked, but the electronic watermark does not appear on the actual print.
