FROM A RARE TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY ARCHITECTURAL JOURNAL. An architectural print of the Lorillard House, Tuxedo Park, NY, 1887. Jas Brown Lord Architect.

Pierre Lorillard, one of the leading members of the Lorillard Tobacco family, bought thousands of acres of rugged, mountainous land 35 miles northwest of New York City and in 1885 developed it into Tuxedo Park, one of the first planned communities in the U.S. Within a span of only one year, Lorillard, along with his principal architect, Bruce Price, completed the infrastructure of Tuxedo Park and created a community of shingle style "cottages" which were let to members of the Tuxedo Club. Tuxedo Park was associated with the social elite of New York, whose members rotated residences each year between New York, Newport and Tuxedo Park. It was also very well known for it's Autumn Ball which was a social highlight each year. The tuxedo coat reputedly got it's name there when Griswold Lorillard, Pierre Lorillard's son, wore his frock coat the the Autumn Ball with the tails cut off after a style that he brought from England.

"TUXEDO PARK, THE LODGE & LOCKUP, ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES" 1886

Details

FROM HARPERS WEEKLY DECEMBER 18, 1886 "TUXEDO PARK-DRAWN BY HARRY FENN FROM SKETHES, AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY HILL BROTHERS."

Very attractive woodcut print featuring the architectural features of this upscale enclave of wealthy New Yorkers. The following is a direct quote from the article that accompanied the print:

"Tuxedo Park is the most recent addition to the fashionable suburban resorts of New York. About forty miles from the city, in the beautiful lake region of New Jersey, Mr. Pierre Lorillard selected for a park 6000 acres of forest, near the centre of which is a clear lake two miles or more in length, with picturesque scenery about it. The land is undulatory, and within this area there are long stretches of level and steep hills. It is an ideal situation for a pleasure-ground. Mr. Lorillard set about improving it with as great generoisty as the topography required to make it the most attractive resort, perhaps, in the United States."

Folio, 11" x 16" overall measurement, uncolored woodcut,, excellent condition, New York, 1886. *Please Note* This image is digitally watermarked, but the electronic watermark does not appear on the actual print.
