William Curtis General Indexes of the Botanical Magazine 1805
William Curtis General Indexes of the Botanical Magazine 1805
William Curtis (1746-1799) was a pharmacist and an avid gardener. He began the Botanical Magazine in 1781, editing it until 1798 when John Sims took over. It continues in production to the present day. The volumes of the early decades were particularly beautifully illustrated with hand-colored etchings, drawn by Sydenham Edwards and etched by Francis Sansom. This General Index contains 1. An Alphabetical Latin Index. 2. An Alphabetical English Index. 3. An Enumeration of the Plants figured in the Order of Publication, with Corrections and Additional Remarks. 4. A Systematic Arrangement. It is an important publication, a notable product of the Enlightment.

4to., oval aquatint portrait frontis, original marbled boards, a new grey buckram spine, paper label. This copy is a little rubbed at the edges but overall VG- an attractive example of a very scarce item.
