Basil Besler "Lilac and Box Plants" 1613
From the Hortus Eystettensis "Syringa flore lacteo, Buxus, Syringa flore caeruleo."

Without doubt one of the greatest flower books ever produced. It was conceived as a horticultural record of the famous gardens of the Prince Bishop of Eichstatt. It was divided into four sections, one for each of the seasons, and was comprised almost entirely of ornamental plants. Basilius Besler (1561-1629), the author, was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist.

EXTREMELY RARE (only 300 copies of the book were produced).

Imperial folio, 17" x 21 1/2" overall measurement, delicately hand-colored copperplate engraving, browing around edges, few ink spots, few small tears in outer margin will mat out otherwise very good conditioin. Original printing on verso shows faintly through print. Nuremberg, 1613. References: Nissen 158, Blunt pp.95-97. *Please Note* This image is digitally watermarked, but the electronic watermark does not appear on the actual print.
